Equipment are subject to vibration due to many causes, such as rotating unbalanced forces, transportation, wind effect, sea waves, shock, etc. It can cause equipment or structural failure due to fatigue, wear and other phenomena.

If induced vibration forces the equipment to vibrate at its natural frequency, then it may causes severe damage.

Therefore, it is important to determine the natural frequency of the device and perform vibration testing using different methods.

Vibration testing can be performed as:

  • Sinesweep testing: In this test the frequency of the test is swept between a low value, such as 1 or 2 Hz to high frequencies, such as 2,000 to 3,000Hz. The displacement is in the form of sinwave.
  • Sinebeat testing: In this test, several waves are applied at certain frequency as one beat. Many beats are applied depending on the specification requirements.
  • Random Vibration testing: In this test, the applied displacement in respect to time is random. Such as having an earthquake. This test can be done in single axis or on a triaxial table.

Random vibration testing is also considered seismic testing in certain cases.
